Washburn University’s beautiful campus is set on 160 acres with advanced services and facilities. The school has plenty of free or cheap events or activities for students and the public. On-campus experiences include the Mulvane Art Museum, the Washburn Ichabods athletics teams, and university theatre performances.

Shunga Trail

The Shunga Trail is a 13-mile concrete path that runs beside Shunga Creek. The wonderful trail is through city parks, meadows, and forests. You can walk, run, bike, or walk your dog on Shunga Trail! Pedestrians have right of way, and bicyclists must be attentive to walkers.

The trail is being periodically lengthened, and the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation plan is that it will ultimately cross all of Topeka. Shunga Trail begins at Crestview Park and ends at SE Golden Avenue. The trail is also connected to Deer Creek Trail and Landon Nature Trail.

Sherwood Forest is 2.5 miles from west entrance of the Shunga Trail. Parking is available at Crestview Park.

Kansas Museum of History

The Kansas Museum of History tells the history of Kansas from prehistoric time to current days. Main subjects at the museum are Native American tribal history, early settlers, and The Civil War among others.

The Kansas Sampler Foundation named the museum as one of the eight Wonders of Kansas History. The museum displays several large exhibits including a locomotive from 1880, 1950s diner, and Cheyenne tipi. Guests can visit the Museum Store for great gifts.

As part of the museum, the Discovery Place area is a great place for children to experience history.
